In your opinion, what importance, if any, does the existence of a Jewish state have to you personally and to Jewish people in general?

“It is of central importance to me personally. I have a large extended family there, have visited dozens of times and lived there for a year. In terms of its importance to Jewish people in general, this is more complicated. For (I believe) the majority, Israel does NOT play a central role. This is especially the case for younger generations.”

Do you feel committed in some way to defend the future existence of Israel?

“Absolutely.”

Do you affiliate yourself with a specific denomination in Judaism?

“I do not affiliate with a particular movement.”

Do you feel morally responsible for Israel’s actions (such as its management of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict)?

“I feel compassionate towards anyone who is mistreated, but don’t think I would say I feel morally responsible.”

In your opinion, what is the main thing Israelis fail to understand about the reality of being Jewish outside of Israel?

“They lack an understanding of and appreciation for the diversity of Jewish affiliation and identification among American Jews. They also don’t understand, at times, that Israel’s security and military realty is not something that resonates with many American Jews.”

How would you describe Israel’s policy (formally and in practice) regarding its relationship with the Diaspora?

“Israel attempts to connect with and relate to Jews worldwide, although much of that is in the context of Israel’s political and security situation. More and more, however, Israel has done a good job sharing stories of Israel’s innovation and contributions towards science, medicine, technology and the humanities. With that said, there is still much that can be done to improve its relationship to the diaspora.”

In your opinion, does Israel have an obligation to defend and help Jewish communities in need?

“I believe Jews have an obligation to defend and help Jewish communities in need. I don’t single out Israel for this, but include them in our overall responsibilities as part of Jewish peoplehood.”

Have you ever been to Israel? if you have, can you summarize your impression from the Israeli reality?

“Many times. It is a home away form home. I feel deeply connected on a spiritual level with Israel and feel at home with my family there. Israel is a complicated country with very different cultural norms. I enjoy being immersed in the culture very much.”

Can you tell us a bit about the Jewish community in your hometown? Is it organized? Are there community activities?

“Portland Oregon is a relatively secular Jewish community. Like in most communities, there is an active, involved core, but there is a broad and diverse sense of Jewish identity here that is more secular than in other cities in which I have lived.”
