In your opinion, what importance, if any, does the existence of a Jewish state have to you personally and to Jewish people in general?

“The existence of a Jewish State is essential for the Jewish people and for me personally. It is more my home than America.”

Do you feel committed in some way to defend the future existence of Israel?

“Interestingly enough, I would sooner join the Israeli army than the American forces. I would do what it takes short of sparing my life to support Israel.”

Do you affiliate yourself with a specific denomination in Judaism? What is your view regarding the dominance of the Orthodox denomination in Israel religious establishment?

“I am a proud Reform Jew. I will that there was a deeper understanding of Liberal Judaism in Israel and certainly more representation in the Kenneset.”

Do you feel morally responsible for Israel’s actions (such as its management of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict)?

“No I do not feel responsible. I believe that Netanyahu is responsible.”

In your opinion, what is the main thing Israelis fail to understand about the reality of being Jewish outside of Israel?

“That there are more than one mode of being religious.”

How would you describe Israel’s policy (formally and in practice) regarding its relationship with the Diaspora?

“Israel should have a stronger relationship with the diaspora. Netanyahu needs to improve his image.”

In your opinion, does Israel have an obligation to defend and help Jewish communities in need?

“Yes.”

Have you ever been to Israel? 

“I have been to Israel 27 times.”

Can you tell us a bit about the Jewish community in your hometown? Is it organized? Are there community activities?

“The synagogue where I grew up was Reform bordering on Neo-Hasidic. The Rabbi was very charismatic and attracted people from around the country. Sense of pride in Judaism.”
