In your opinion, what importance, if any, does the existence of a Jewish state have to you personally and to Jewish people in general?

“I think it’s really important, considering where history has taken us, for Jews to have a country where they can determine their own destiny. Israel’s amazing and what the people have accomplished are amazing. I just wish it were going with more of a ‘light among the nations’ type of way, rather than an occupying kind of way.”

Do you feel committed in some way to defend the future existence of Israel?

“Yes.”

In your opinion, what is the main thing Israelis fail to understand about the reality of being Jewish outside of Israel?

“There are so many meaningful, wonderful ways to be Jewish that are life enhancing. They also don’t understand how hard it is – to love Israel and want to defend it, and also to want to be nuanced and critical of what goes on with the rabbanut and with Palestinians, in the current political environment in the States where so many are so critical of Israel. How can I express my love and my critiques and be heard for both? It’s a real struggle.”

Do you feel morally responsible for Israel’s actions (such as its management of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict)?

“Yes – and it pains me.”

How would you describe Israel’s policy (formally and in practice) regarding its relationship with the Diaspora?

“This Israeli government doesn’t care.”

In your opinion, does Israel have an obligation to defend and help Jewish communities in need?

“Not sure. I guess yes.”

Have you ever been to Israel? if you have, can you summarize your impression from the Israeli reality?

“Yes – 5 trips and living there for 2 straight years. Summary – It’s complicated.”

Can you tell us a bit about the Jewish community in your hometown? Is it organized? Are there community activities?

“NYC – lots of Jews of all stripes, no embarrassment, no shame.”
