 Alexandr Trostyanitsyn (born 1975), a member of the Jewish community of Lviv, Ukraine. Born and raised in Lviv, volunteered to the IDF where he did a full army service. makes his living today as a manager and travel guide.

The Jewish community of Lviv was one of the largest Jewish communities of eastern Europe preceding World War II, with a population of about 140,000. Almost all members of the Lviv community was killed in the holocaust. Today the Jewish population in Lviv is estimated at 1,100.


In your opinion, what importance, if any, does the existence of a Jewish state have to you personally and to Jewish people in general?

“It’s our second home. It’s a shelter for us. It’s an alternate airport, ready to take us at any moment.”

Do you feel committed in some way to defend the future existence of Israel?

“yes.”

Do you feel morally responsible for Israel’s actions (such as its management of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict)?

“Partially. All the same, the decision should be taken by the people who live there permanently.”

What is your view regarding the dominance of the Orthodox division in Israel religious establishment?

“Religion should cooperate on an equal footing with the state and not to dominate it and its citizens.”

How would you describe Israel’s policy (formally and in practice) regarding its relationship with the Diaspora?

“Sometimes, in some parts of the world, to be a Jew is very dangerous. In general, relations between the Diaspora and Israel, there are so many aspects and it is unclear.”

In your opinion, does Israel have an obligation to defend and help Jewish communities in need?

“Yes, Israel must defend all people who care about Israel, where ever they are.”

Can you tell us a bit about the Jewish community in your hometown? Is it organized? Are there community activities?

“It’s a small Jewish community with a long and rich history.”
