Renée Dayán-Shabot, Executive Director, Tribuna Israelita (The analysis and opinion institution of the Jewish Community in Mexico). I was born in Mexico City. My grandparents came to Mexico from Syria at the beginning of the XIX Century. I have a B.A. in communications and a M.A. in Judaic Studies. I am very committed to the Jewish community and have been working as a professional and also as a lay leader for different institutions. I am Vice-president of the WJC representing North America.

In your opinion, what importance, if any, does the existence of a Jewish state have to you personally and to Jewish people in general?

“The existence of Israel is, undoubtedly, of great importance. Is the spiritual center of the Jewish life. We have a deep connection with the land, through history, religion, culture, and identity.”

Do you feel committed in some way to defend the future existence of Israel?

“Definitely. In fact, many of the projects implemented by my institution (Tribuna Israelita) are designed to present a positive image of Israel and eliminate stereotypes and prejudices against Israel and the Jewish people.”

Do you feel morally responsible for Israel’s actions (such as its management of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict)?

“Not morally responsible, but I am completely aware that Israel’s actions have an effect in the lives of Jews all over the world.”

In your opinion, what is the main thing Israelis fail to understand about the reality of being Jewish outside of Israel?

“That what happens in Israel has a profound impact in the Jewish communities of the Diaspora.”

How would you describe Israel’s policy (formally and in practice) regarding its relationship with the Diaspora?

“Although formally Israel has established different committees to relate with the Diaspora I think in practice, there is more to be done.”

In your opinion, does Israel have an obligation to defend and help Jewish communities in need?

“Yes.”

Have you ever been to Israel?

“Yes, many times.”

If an Israeli tourist should ever come across your hometown, which experience should he/she not miss?

“A visit to the Jewish Community, the synagogues, the school system and community centers.
Downtown Mexico City and the Teotihuacan Pyramids.”
