The Interviewee – Beth Dwoskin (Born 1951) retired. Born in Detroit, MI. Worked as a librarian, hold a Master’s Degree in Jewish Studies.


In your opinion, what importance, if any, does the existence of a Jewish state have to you personally and to Jewish people in general?

“It is critically important to me and the Jewish people in general.”

Do you feel committed in some way to defend the future existence of Israel?

“Yes, but not only by military means. I am committed to the future of democratic Israel.”

Do you affiliate yourself with a specific denomination in Judaism? What is your view regarding the dominance of the Orthodox denomination in Israel religious establishment?

“I am formally affiliated with Conservative Judaism, though I regard myself as a Jew ethnically and culturally. I think the Orthodox dominance in Israel is a disaster.”

Do you feel morally responsible for Israel’s actions (such as its management of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict)?

“Yes, in a way.”

In your opinion, what is the main thing Israelis fail to understand about the reality of being Jewish outside of Israel?

“They don’t understand the diverse practice of Judaism and the acceptance of diversity among Jews.”

How would you describe Israel’s policy (formally and in practice) regarding its relationship with the Diaspora?

“Israeli policy is tone-deaf to the Diaspora and the world.”

In your opinion, does Israel have an obligation to defend and help Jewish communities in need?

“Yes.”

Have you ever been to Israel? if you have, can you summarize your impression from the Israeli reality?

“Yes. Israelis are paranoid, and I understand that.”

Can you tell us a bit about the Jewish community in your hometown? Is it organized? Are there community activities?

“It is small, diverse, but not very informed.”
