“They don’t understand the impact Israel’s decisions have on Jews within the diaspora. Every time something happens in Israel, Antisemitism rises dramatically. “

In your opinion, what importance, if any, does the existence of a Jewish state have to you personally and to Jewish people in general?

“It’s extremely important that the Jews have a safe place to go.”

Do you feel committed in some way to defend the future existence of Israel?

“100%.”

Do you affiliate yourself with a specific denomination in Judaism? What is your view regarding the dominance of the Orthodox denomination in Israel religious establishment?

“I am personally modern orthodox but not practicing. I think it’s important for Israel to have a safe space for all streams of Judaism whilst still upholding the right to run the country on the ideals of Judaism.”

Do you feel morally responsible for Israel’s actions (such as its management of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict)?

“Yes.”

In your opinion, what is the main thing Israelis fail to understand about the reality of being Jewish outside of Israel?

“They don’t understand the impact Israel’s decisions have on Jews within the diaspora. Every time something happens in Israel, Antisemitism rises dramatically.”

How would you describe Israel’s policy (formally and in practice) regarding its relationship with the Diaspora?

“It needs a lot of work!”

In your opinion, does Israel have an obligation to defend and help Jewish communities in need?

“I think that Israel has a lot to deal with personally, therefore we should understand it’s not always possible, but where they can help diaspora Jews, they should.”

Have you ever been to Israel? if you have, can you summarize your impression from the Israeli reality?

“I have spent a lot of time in Israel, it is nothing like it’s portrayed in the news. Everyone in Israel is like one big family, they argue like a family and love like a family. It’s the safest place to be in the world!”

Can you tell us a bit about the Jewish community in your hometown? Is it organized? Are there community activities?

“It’s very big and vibrant although there is a large split between those who feel they can/should defend Israel and those who don’t. The younger generations are leaning more towards not wanting to stand up for Israel which is very alarming.”
